Self Portraits
In Social Studies, the 5th graders were learning about the Colonies. In Art Integration, we talked about portraits and how the colonists used portraits to express the personality and/or mood of the subject. We examined the art work of Charles Wilson Peale and his portrait of John Beale Bordley to see how this portrait was able to send to a message to the viewer. Each 5th grader was able to create their own self portrait using accurate proportions for their faces. We used Tempera paint and the students mixed colors to match their hair color and skin tones.
